# What is a health check?

### Health check troubleshooting

A health check is a test to make sure your configuration is set up correctly. It confirms your digital property is showing the expected page or content, so RAMP knows, for example, that it's still signed in or that a cookie banner hasn't come back.

### Health check methods

When you set up a health check, you choose one method RAMP uses to decide whether the is healthy:

| **Method** | **What it checks** | **Example** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Source status code | A status code is a number that is sent back to say how a request to a URL went. For example, 200 means “OK, here’s the page,” 302 means “go somewhere else instead,” and 404 means “page not found.” It checks that the source status code for the page RAMP initially scanned is a certain value. | To check that a page is signed in: When a page is authenticated the source status code is typically 200. Select “Source status code” and enter 200. |
| Destination status code | The destination status code is the code for the final page RAMP lands on, after any redirects. It checks that the destination status code is a certain value. | To scan error pages: Select “Destination status code,” and enter 404. |
| Destination page URL | The destination page URL contains or doesn't contain a certain value | To check that a page is signed in: - If your property has a specific login URL, select “Destination page URL” then “doesn’t contain,” and enter the login URL. - If you want to scan all your account pages, select “Destination page URL” then “contains”, and enter the account url (ie. https://example.com/account/) |
| Element selector | Every web page is built from elements. An element selector is a label that uniquely identifies one of those pieces. If you’re not sure how to find a selector, ask your web developer, or right-click the item in your browser and choose **Inspect \> right-click on the element \> copy \> css selector** It checks an HTML element with a certain selector exists or doesn't exist | - To check that a cookie banner hasn’t come back, Select “Element”, enter the selector (ie. #cookie-banner), then select “doesn’t exist” - To check that you’re still signed in, Select “Element”, enter the selector for something only signed-in users see, then select “exists” |

### Choosing the right method

The best method depends on what you want to check and how your site behaves. Most health checks confirm one of three things: that RAMP is still signed in, that something is or isn’t showing on the page (like a cookie banner), or that a setting or preference is still in place (like dark mode).

To check sign-in, open your site in a private or incognito browser window, where you’re signed out, and see what happens. For page content or settings, look at your site with the setting on and off, or with the item showing and hidden, and note what changes. Then use the guidance below.

### If your site redirects to a login page

When you’re signed out, some sites automatically take you to a different page, like example.com/login. Because the URL changes, the simplest choice is the destination page URL.

***Example:*** “Destination page URL doesn’t contain,” and enter https://example.com/login.

The health check passes when RAMP scans the page you want, not the login page.

### If your site shows an error

Some sites stay on the same URL and show an error message instead of redirecting. Because the URL doesn’t change, a URL check won’t catch the problem. Try using destination status codes in this case.

**Example:** “Destination status code is”, and enter 200

Many sites return 401 (not signed in) or 403 (not allowed) when signed-out and 200 (OK) when signed in. The health check passes when RAMP scans the page you want and it gets a 200. The status code may vary depending on your property, check with your developer or contact us for help.

### If you need to check for something on the page

Status codes and URLs can’t tell you what’s actually showing on the page. To check for a specific item, such as a cookie banner or a pop-up, use an HTML element check.

***Example:*** “Element with matching selector”, and enter the cookie banner’s selector, such as #cookie-banner, “doesn’t exist”

The health check passes when RAMP scans the page you want and it does not see the cookie banner, it is still closed.

### If you need to check a setting or preference

Some sites let you choose settings like dark mode or light mode, a language, or a region. These choices are often saved in your browser, so they can reset if that information is cleared. A health check can confirm your setting is still in place.

Settings like dark mode usually don’t change the URL or the status code, so use an HTML element check. Many sites mark the page when a setting is turned on, for example by adding a label like dark-mode or data-theme="dark" to the page.

***Example:*** To confirm dark mode is on, “Element with matching selector”, and enter the selector for the dark mode label, such as .dark-mode or \[data-theme="dark"\]. “exists”

Some settings, like language or region, do appear in the URL. In that case, a URL check is simpler.

***Example:*** If your site shows the English version at https://example.com/en/, select “Destination page URL contains,” and enter https://example.com/en/.

### What happens when a health check fails

RAMP records the actions in your browser so it can try to replay them if a health check fails. If the health check fails, or RAMP can't replay the actions, RAMP will:

- Email your organization's admins.
- Hold off on scanning any pages that use that browser until it is updated.

### How to fix a failing health check

1. Click into your digital property.
2. Navigate to the RAMP settings tab in the sidebar.
3. Select the "Automated Scanning" tab.
4. The browser with the failed health check will have a fail badge in the health check column. There is a button in the actions column that says "repair."

### Common causes

- "Remember Me" wasn't selected during setup, so RAMP may need to sign in every time it opens a new window or tab.

### Working with your development team

Some application security settings can get in the way of Configured Scanning. If that happens, your developers may be able to adjust settings for the account RAMP uses. These options go from the lightest lift to the heaviest:

1. Turn off two-factor authentication (2FA) for the test RAMP's account.
2. Provide a reusable security code.
3. Extend the auto-logout time for RAMP's account.
4. Allowlist RAMP's IP address (we do not publicly share the RAMP bot IP address, users will need to contact support for it.)

Whatever you change, keep it to the test account you use for RAMP.
